Inspired by the light seeking arbutus that line the shoreline of Matthew’s Point on Galiano Island. With thanks to Douglas Thistle-Walker for sharing his beautiful photo “Those Golden Moments” as a reference for this piece.
Arbutus are light seekers, survivors that thrive in difficult circumstances along rocky ledges and steeper hillsides. I love the way they reach out to the light, showing off all their colours, inviting us to reach with them. My paintings often include an arbutus, it’s hard to find a shoreline without one!
